FOLKFAX LOCAL PERFORMERS & EVENTS (SONG PERFORMERS)

Malc Gurnham
Singer, Musician, MC, Radio Presenter & Folk Event Organiser- and
Web Page Designer!

Malc has been involved in the Folkscene since the late sixties, having been originally a singer in a number of local "pop" and "R&B" bands he was encouraged by some friends to go along to a local folk concert involving Alex Campbell, The Spinners and Jackie & Bridie, he was immediately impressed by the friendliness of the performers - particularly Alex, (and the audience!) and a week or two later was taken along to a local folk club and cajoaled into playing a couple of songs which "went down well" and within a couple of months along with some friends decided to start a local Folk Club.

The club went from strength to strength and a little trio by the name of "Thyme" was formed with long time pal Pete Alton and Noel Ford (who later went on to become quite a highly acclaimed cartoonist). Noel left as his career as a cartoonist was starting to take off and Malc & Pete moved their club to the Corner House Pub in Bulkington (Nr Nuneaton in north Warwickshire) and that club evolved into one of the Midlands major Folk Music venues with full houses every week and all the top folk performers of the time appearing - regular visitors included Jasper Carrot, Fred Wedlock, The Humblebums (Gerry Rafferty & Billy Connolly), Mike Harding, Nic Jones etc and the club was proud to boast the first Midlands appearances of the likes of Gary & Vera Aspey, Downes & Beer, and numerous others. It was quite fitting that having started all this off Alex Capmbell made one of his very last appearances at the club only shortly before his sad death

Malc and Pete helped set up a new local morris side The Anker Morrismen, who are still going strong! and Malc and wife Brenda teamed up with another couple John & Elaine Meechan and set up Bedworth Folk Festival - initially a one day Festival which is now generally regarded as the biggest, and most successful, annual winter folk event in the UK

Malc has been, and continues to be, a regular folk news contributor to many of the local papers in the north of Warwickshire and for a time was the local BBC Radio Folk Presenter, and as you would expect has been involved in numerous bands, duos and trios as well as performing solo. These days in addition to the Bedworth Folk Day organising he can be found singing or MCing at local Clubs, Concerts and Festivals, looking after his own monthly free folk club "Folk at the Swan", or doing his bit on bass with Glorishears Ceilidh band

Malc is always happy to do anything "Folky" singing, playing, MCing, presenting etc - just email
